## A Style Built for Efficiency
**Wing Chun (咏春)** is a southern Chinese martial art designed for close-range fighting. Where other styles favor wide, sweeping motions, Wing Chun keeps everything compact: short punches, economical footwork, and a relentless focus on the centerline.
## A Short History
Legend credits the art's creation to the nun Ng Mui and her student Yim Wing Chun, after whom the style is named. In the 20th century, Grandmaster **Ip Man** brought Wing Chun to Hong Kong, where a young **Bruce Lee** trained before developing his own philosophy of combat. Today Wing Chun is practiced worldwide.
## Core Concepts
- **The centerline** — attack and defend along the shortest line to your opponent.
- **Simultaneous attack and defense** — one hand deflects while the other strikes.
- **Sensitivity (chi sao)** — "sticky hands" drills teach you to feel and react to pressure.
- **Economy of motion** — no movement is wasted.
## Signature Training Tools
The most iconic Wing Chun image is the **wooden dummy (木人桩)**, a wooden post with arms and a leg used to drill angles, deflections, and the famous **inch punch (寸劲)** — a strike that generates power over a tiny distance.
